Effective sun protection mesh made out of stainless steel

Buildings with large windows areas and, in particular, the modern glass architecture require effective protection against intensive solar radiation. The cleverest solution for this is offered by transparent wire mesh: with its precisely balanced open area, it blocks and filters sunlight. In this way it also contributes, at the same time, to a pleasant cool but also light indoor climate.

Protection from the sun – and from high costs

Outer solar protection with architectural wire mesh is significantly more effective than interior systems. Apart from the excellent protective effect, it is also a very economic solution: the energy costs for air conditioning are lowered.

However, this is still not enough: our transparent HAVER Architectural Mesh combines many more advantages:

Effective shading with architectural mesh

HAVER Architectural Mesh which has a semi-transparent geometry is ideally suited as an effective, outside sun protection on facades - in fact at all times of the year:

  • In summer, for a high angle of incidence of the sunlight, the structure of the wire mesh achieves an effective shading.
  • In winter our wire mesh , for a lower angle of incidence of the sunlight, allows some it to pass through. You can therefore use the solar energy to reduce your heating costs.

Natural ventilation

Stainless steel wire mesh offers optimum air circulation as an outer sun protection.

Its open surface prevents warm air from accumulating in front of the facade. An appropriate gap between the wire mesh fabric and the glass promotes this ventilation effect.

Use of daylight with transparency from inside and visual protection from outside

Efficient shading is not the same as darkening: Solar protection made out wire mesh continues to offer you good transparency for a view outside.
The combination of the mesh types, the viewing angle and the light conditions determines the optical effect of stainless steel wire mesh facades. Because of the mostly frontal viewing angle and the good light conditions during the day, many architectural wire mesh types appear extremely transparent from inside. At the same time the metal mesh ensures good visual protection from outside. It prevents undesired glimpses and protects your private sphere.

Fixed and removable solutions

Wire mesh is particularly suitable for permanent use as a large area stretched solar protection. However, also for removable solutions, the sun protection wire mesh can be integrated into movable or folding down frames.

Shading effect of wire mesh

The majority of our architectural wire mesh types already achieve, for a sunlight incidence angle of 60° and double glazing, a reduction in transmitted solar energy of between 40% and 70%. In combination with corresponding sun protection glazing, they actually achieve g-values  of between 0.1 and 0.18 for the same incidence angle.

Best values for sun protection

Solar protection wire mesh LARGO-TWIST 2045

The mesh type LARGO-TWIST 2045, specially developed for sun protection, goes even further. At a 60° sunlight incidence angle, the solar energy input is reduced by more than 90%. In combination with sun protection glazing, one can achieve a g-value of 0.02.

Excursus: What is a g-value? What is an Fc-factor?

Appropriate key indicators are used for objective determination of the solar protection effect. Thus the g-value (overall energy transmittance) defines the proportion of the sun’s energy which passes through a transparent component such as a window. A g-value of 0.6 means that 60% of the solar energy reaches the interior, either directly as solar radiation or through warming of the system and heat output into the interior.

Use of wire mesh as sun protection in combination with a glass facade is seen as the interaction of the whole facade system. This includes the following factors: the type of glazing, the angle of incidence of the sunlight, the distance between the wire mesh and the glass facade (ventilation), the gloss level of the wire mesh.

The Bayerische Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V. (ZAE Bayern) has investigated various glazings and different angles of incidence in connection with good and poor ventilation, respectively for outer shading through wire mesh .

The effect of the wire mesh in reducing energy transmission can be determined in that the g-value of the whole system (wire mesh and glass facade) is set against the g-value of the glass facade. This results in the energy reduction factor FC of shading. A value of 0.4 states accordingly that the energy transmission of the whole system (wire mesh and the glass facade) is reduced by 40% due to the sun protection mesh used.
