One day Willi Mense was sent to Tunisia for a commissioning assignment. “An interesting country, this North African Tunisia,” he said.
The work in the cement works went well and the accommodation in a hotel complex built for tourists was impeccable. But there was one downside: the food. Willi Mense was a lover of Westphalian cuisine. Tunisia should be like his mother’s house.
He convinced the hotel chef that his menu lacked Reibeplätzchen pancakes – those tasty Westphalian pancakes made from potatoes. The chef was open to new ideas – so they went to the market, bought the ingredients and Willi Mense showed the kitchen staff how to make Westphalian potato pancakes.
This new recipe was well received, and Willi Mense received freshly made potato pancakes almost every day for the rest of his stay, which other hotel guests also enjoyed. When he returned to Oelde, he proudly told his work colleagues: “My potato pancakes are now on the official menu.”
